The 10-digit number, also known as the TAN number, is used to provide tax collection or tax deduction services and to perform income tax-related tasks. So this number is mandatory for all income taxpayers and individuals, including companies. TAN application online is accepted via the Tin-NSDL website. After that, you may fill up and fill out the application online. Once you click on the submit button, a screen will appear with an acknowledgement, including a unique 14-digit acknowledgement number. All individuals who are liable for deduction tax (TDS) or who are needed to acquire tax at the source must get a tax identification number (TAN) (TCS).

How to Apply for TAN?

Individuals or establishments wishing to obtain a TAN number can complete the application form 49B and submit it online at Tin-NSDL or the TIN centres. Visit http://tin.nsdl.com or www.incometaxindia.gov.in to find TIN centres near you. There is no need to attach any certificates with the completed application submitted directly to the TIN Centers. However, the application submitted online must be accompanied by an affidavit issued by the NDLS Internet. The application will be considered, and the TAN number will be sent to the address given in the application.

TAN Application Online

The application procedure of the TAN income tax number is available in both online and offline modes. We look at the application procedure involved online for a new TAN number. Candidates need to follow the steps mentioned below here if they intend to apply online:

  • Visit www.tin-nsdl.com/index.html
  • Select ‘TAN’ under the ‘services’ dropdown
  • Click on ‘apply online’.
  • Select ‘new TAN.’
  • On the new page, choose from the list’ category of deductors of this tan application.’
  • Next, click on ‘select.’
  • In doing so, the applicant is redirected to tan application Form online 49 B
  • Fill in the form
  • Click ‘submit’

After filling out the application, you have to register by pressing the “submit” button on the form. The on-screen application prompt will ask if other changes need to be made. If all the information is correct, the taxpayer can go to the payment page.

Procedure After Receipt of Acknowledgment

After paying the bill online or choosing the other payment method, a 14-digit number will appear on the screen informing you of the payment. Keep this in mind, and then use that number to refer to related information exchanges. Then sign this certificate and attach the check or draft, if any, along with a copy of the TAN (old or new)

Processing Fees

A fee of ₹ 63 will be charged for making these changes. Payment can be made by credit or debit card through an online banking service. Or you can pay by check or bank draft (demand draft) in the name of “Tin-NSDL”.

  • Private business establishment branches
  • Individuals association (AOPs) 
  • Artificial judicial person

The TAN number can be obtained from a company or branch, autonomous/legal entities, and state or federal or local government bodies.

In case of payments made by credit card/debit card/net banking, the TAN number will be allotted within five working days of online application submission. For other cases, the expected turnaround time is fifteen days. You can track the TAN application status very easily online.

Section 203A of the Income Tax Act states that “all organisations, institutions, and individuals providing services to the public, including taxable or income taxable, must apply to the income tax department.” Also, section number of the Income Tax Act (including electronic) should be marked on the income tax-deductible or income tax collection application forms, certificates, and payment forms. Suppose the TAN number is not included in the TDS / TCS forms. In that case, the forms will not go to the specified office bearers or offices, i.e., the income tax department will not consider applications without the TAN number applied online.

Individuals, organisations, or companies that provide the above services and services will be fined ₹ 10 or more if they do not obtain the TAN number or fail to indicate the TAN number in the required certificates.

Offline Application for TAN

This offline form 49B, an application for the allotment of tax deduction and collection of this TAN account number, must be filled in duplicate and submitted to any TIN-facilitation centres. The address of the TIN- facilitation centre can be taken from the NSDL site https://www.tin-nsdl.com. These TAN offline forms can be downloaded from the official website of the IT department. A hard copy of the TAN number forms is also available at TIN facilitation centres.

Form No. INC-7 specified under sub-section (1) of section seven has to be used by companies that have not registered themselves under the Companies Act 2013 for the offline application of allotment of tax deduction/collection of this TAN account number.

How to Know Your TAN?

To know one’s TAN number, the process involved is the same as when it comes to searching for a TAN number. The quick process involved in knowing one’s TAN number is as below:

Visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

  • Click on ‘Know Your TAN’
  • Select ‘Name’ or ‘TAN’ number under the ‘TAN Search’ option
  • Select ‘Category of Deductor’
  • Select ‘State’
  • Provide ‘Name’ or ‘TAN’ depending on the option selected under ‘TAN number Search.’
  • Provide the registered mobile number
  • Click on ‘Continue’
  • Insert the One Time Password (OTP) that can be sent on the registered mobile number on the corresponding screen of this tan number
  • Next, click on ‘Validate.’
